Kewalo Apartments is a 38 unit affordable housing property located at 1407 Kewalo Street near Lunalilo Street. This property was built in the early 1960’s under the HUD 236 Loan Program and currently has thirty project based Section 8 residents. The remaining eight residents pay the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development(HUD) approved rents.
The project site consists of two buildings and contains two bedroom units only. Unit interiors include bathrooms, kitchens, bedrooms and living areas. Many of the residents of Kewalo Apartments have been there for several years.
Hawaii Community Development Board, in partnership with Pacific Development Group, purchased the property and later obtained Federal and State low-income housing tax credits from the Hawaii Housing Finance & Development Corporation (HHFDC). By securing said tax credits, it made the rehabilitation and long-term preservation of the rental units possible.
